They can if they're paying you for it.

It depends on the job that you have. I am a nurse and if I leave before my replacement comes, this is considered patient abandonment, and I could lose my license over it. Other professions are held to this standard too, such as police officers, fireman, air traffic controllers, train controllers, etc..If you are dealing with the safety of the public, you are held to higher standards.

You need to check your contract. If it says anything about mandatory overtime, then he can. Otherwise, you have the right to say no. Unfortunately, if you're in a hire/fire state (like Florida), you can get fired for not working overtime, even if it isn't in your contract.

If someone is forcing you to stay past your shift without paying you, there is NO circumstance to justify it. Tell him to go screw himself!

They can't even "make you" work your regular shift, but then can fire you (they'll think of a different reason of course) if you don't and they HAVE to pay you overtime (anything over 40 hours per week) for it.

He can't "make you" do anything. You work the amount of time that is required normally, and encouraged to stay over time, but not make you.

No he cannot and next time he tries just call the sherif and tell him you are being held against your will. Then go start putting in job apps.
