Its sublimitation

2006-09-26 09:23:06 · answer #1 · answered by *:.Ojos Verdes.:* 3 · 0 3

The correct answer is: condensation. Some punters answered 'Sublimation'. This is not so. Sublimation is the passing of a solid into a gas without going through a liquid phase and vice versa. A few examples: Dry ice (solid CO2) you can physically see it going straight from solid to gas with your own eyes. If you heat iodine crystals, a purple gas appears which solidifies on contact with a cold surface. A more common example is air that is saturated with water turns into solid snowflakes when there is a sudden temperature drop. Ok, nurdish answer, but you did ask!

Pressure. To make gas liquid it has to be compressed to the point the particles of gas are no longer separated.
Condensation is NOT turning gas to liquid. It's liquid within a gas collecting because it hits a colder surface.

This is an exothermic phase change
(and the reason why steam burns are worse than hot liquid burns).

You're all wrong, it's sublimation, the freezing of a gas to turn it into a liquid.
Condensation is the cooling of a heated liquid.
