I have Windows XP. I bought the computer from a local guy who builds them himself, so I'm not sure what it has. Thanks.

Don't forget that you may not see the NIC if the driver is not installed for it, that includes one on the motherboard. XP is good at providing drivers automatically but it isn't infallible. Look for a big telephone plug with 8 wires in it on a card or the back of the motherboard first. Then, if you have one, check settings/control panel/network connections for signs of it. If nothing is there you probably have a NIC but no driver. Find the motherboard manufacturer's web site and try to get them there.

nicely, do no longer be bothered, i'm right here to respond to your question and clean up any doubts. Your computing gadget, like maximum more moderen and older computers, is Ethernet waiting because it has the jack hookup contained in the again. to purpose this, plug in an Ethernet cable on your computing gadget and the different end of the cable on your Router, Modem, or inspite of you've. Then, attempt to get entry to the web - it is going to paintings. i'm hoping this helped! Reguards, Peter

There are 2 ways to do it.
1) Manually you can peep on the backside of the CPU and check if you can see any RJ45 Port which looks like telephone jack however its bigger than the telephone jack.

2) Or else you can ping 127.0.0.1 from your computer, and if it returns any value that means the ethernet card is present, however if its not then it means the ethernet card is not present.

Ok this is what you must do take out your motherboard with the claw of your hamme. Once that is done smash all the cards on it. After that is done put the motherboard back in it and restart the pc. When it says you dont have a ethernet card that means your pc had one and you need to go out and buy a new one.

Click:
Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager. Then look for Network adapters (it should be right below Monitors). If you have a network card it'll show up.

Click the little + sign (if you have a network card) and it'll tell you what kind you have.

Look at the ports to see if you have one that looks like a telephone jack on steroids. That is your ethernet connector. If you have one, you should have an ethernet card.
