I know it is over "occupied" land, but please tell me how this came to be, Isreal claims it is their land, and Palestine that it is theirs...... Give me some history - and why cant an agreement not be made even with pressure from US and others??? Will a resolution be found?

Two different parts to the argument.

The first is over the main land that forms the nation of Israel. This was land that used to belong to the British, which all used to be called Palestine.. Part of that land (50%+) was given to form what is now called Jordan. Part (25%) was purchased by the UN and given to form the nation of Israel. And the rest (25%) kept the name of Palestine and was allowed to become its own country.

So, the first debate is whether the UN was allowed to buy land from the British and give it to Israel. This is unlikely to be resolved except with the complete destruction of Israel, or if everyone around Israel decides to stop trying to destroy it.


The second debate arises from occupied territories of what used to be Egypt, Jordan, (the new) Palestine, etc. Essentially what happened is that these countries attacked Israel, and during the fighting Israel captured some of the attackers' lands. When Israel eventually won the war, it kept what it had captured as occupied territory. The same as countries have done for thousands of years.

So, the second debate is whether Israel is allowed to occupy and control land that it captured from enemies, as a results of wars that the other countries started. This could be resolved if Israel decides to give back the land it captured, or if the other countries admit they were wrong and stop trying to get their land back.

The second situation is much more likely to ever be resolved than the first.

it is NOT over the 'occupied' territories. Israel has offered to give them back. Arafat had a deal where 97% of the occupied territories would be returned, but he needed to recognize the state of Israel, and police his militants from attacking it. He could not do this- and therefore could not accept the deal.

Palestinians are not a cultural or racial group. They are political refugees that Egypt and Jordan refused to let in, and were kept in refugee camps to be used as political pawns against Israel. There was no such thing as a "Palestinian" prior to 1967.

The PLO was started in 1964 as a terrorist organization to liberate palestine. the 'occupied territories were occupied by Egypt and Jordan then. The PLO wasn't trying to extracate themselves from Egypt and Jordan, but was trying to get rid of the state of Israel.

It's not about the Occupied Territories at all. It's about the mere existance of the state of israel. It's about bigotry and hatred towards the Jews. They look across the fence and see a modern, high tech, prosperous economy that was built by hard work, education and a dream. It's pretty hard to see your enemy prospering while you wallow in your own bile. Better kill them.

If the Arabs put down their weapons tomorrow- peace would break out in the middle east. If the Israeli's put down their weapons tomorrow, they'd be brutally murdered and overrun. Does anyone disagree with that statement?

The British Mandate for Palestine is what made Israel.

The preamble to the League of Nations document that establishes the British Mandate for the territory of Palestine states the purposes as follows:

Whereas the Principal Allied Powers have agreed, for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions of Article 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations, to entrust to a Mandatory selected by the said Powers the administration of the territory of Palestine, which formerly belonged to the Turkish Empire, within such boundaries as may be fixed by them; and

Whereas the Principal Allied Powers have also agreed that the Mandatory should be responsible for putting into effect the declaration originally made on November 2nd, 1917, by the Government of His Britannic Majesty [the Balfour Declaration], and adopted by the said Powers, in favor of the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing should be done which might prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country; and

Whereas recognition has thereby been given to the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country;
Article 6 further states:

The Administration of Palestine, while ensuring that the rights and position of other sections of the population are not prejudiced, shall facilitate Jewish immigration under suitable conditions and shall encourage, in co-operation with the Jewish agency referred to in Article 4, close settlement by Jews on the land, including State lands and waste lands not required for public purposes.

Its been going on since back in Bible days. Israelites are descendants of Abraham's son Issac. Palestinians are descendants of Abraham's son Ishmael. The two boys were born of different mothers and basically didn't get along. Abraham sent Ishmael and his mother away so that his wife and son Issac would be happy. God promised that Ishmael would become the father of a nation. God also promised that Issac would be the father of a nation. Issac was the father of Jacob who was the father of twelve sons who became the fathers of the twelve tribes of the nation of Israel. The two nations have been fighting ever since. The nation of Israel has a lot of trials still to come too.

The zionist Jews wanted a country after WW2 and the whole holocaust thing.Palestine had occupied that land for thousands of years, Britain took the land and gave it to Israel, they took part of Jordan too I believe to make Israel. Palestinians were given no time to take their belongings, they have been persecuted by Israel ever since. Israel claims the land was given to them by God in the bible, like thats a valid argument.Israel wants all arabs, funny because they are arab,wiped off the face of the earth, the zionist regime in israel wants all that land and wont be happy till it is all theirs. The palestinians and other muslim countries are sick of Israels **** and sick of the US backing Israel when Israel is the true terrorist country.

The simple fact whether you want to admit it to yourself or not, is that Israel has no basis to be a country.The land should be given back to the palestinians.I mean Israel is what Jews? They are more fighting over religion than the land. The Jewish people are harassed all the time,have been for years.See they have been moved from their land one time before,they were gone for hundreds of years,and in the end they got their land back,remembering every thing about their religion and ethnic back round,so you see it is relay their land.By the way all that happens over their is written in the bible.
