Extenuating circumstances.
They probably would only eat the ones who had died.
Not murdered them to eat them which would be a whole different kettle of fish.

It is illegal if you do it. However if you were shipwrecked and that was your only form of survival, then I very much doubt that you will be taken to court.

Yes. They investigate whether you ate the people out of necessity or something darker. Are you shipwrecked on a derserted island, or did your boat run aground off some S.Cali beach?

They had a rule in the past that if a person died
at sea you could eat them. If you killed, then ate
them it was murder. It went to court until they decided.
I could see it going to court today.
They always seem to have the word cannibal attached
to their person and name if it's done.

Answering that question? YES it is illegal.
But have you seen the true life film ALIVE if not i suggest you watch it that should answer all your questions.
and the question you should ask yourself at the end of the film is. What would YOU do in that type of situation?

i don`t know but if they had eaten all the witnesses and circumstantial evidence is not allowed they couldn`t get done for it could they? i don't think there`s a specific law on eating dead people so long as you don`t dig them up

As with all laws, it would obviously depend on the jurisdiction -- state, country, etc.
Laws way out at sea get tricky, and there are very few fixed rules that apply in every situation.

If they killed someone, that would be murder, but if they ate someone already dead, there would be extenuating circumstances. Most of us couldn't imagine eating another human, but if you are suffering the tortures of starvation, then, meat is meat.
