I have no problems with black people, but I do find it very racist to have NCAA, Black scholarships, Black tv, black colleges, American ***** funds, etc. All people are created equally, so why is it okay to single out black people for certain things, when it is not okay to do the same for whites? I think tv should be tv, scholarships should be for the most qualified regardless of their skin color, colleges should be for everyone regardless their race, etc. Keep in mind there are also a lot of white, uneducated, poor, etc people out there!

how do two wrongs make a right? Doesn't Affirmative Action select a person for a job or promotion, or other government funds, based on something other than merit first? How can it be right now and wrong before? and as for the NAACP, well I challenge you to go beyond their press releases and take an objective, hard look at the work they are currently doing. the NAACP, just like the ACLU started out doing honorable work with the best of intentions. Now both organizations exist to pay the company lawyers, they require big head lines to feed a huge beast.

you make it seem like white people are the only racist people from your paragraph..whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, etc. all have people in their groups that have racist mentalities sadly to say...i agree that people should be given an equal chance at success in life...and some people (whether based on race, family history, or several other factors) have it more difficult than others...im sure people who claim blacks are lazy, uneducated, poor, etc. are not talking about specific people..because obviously some of the smartest and successful people today are african americans...affirmative action was created as a stepping stone to give equality for those who WANT to further there lives...there are still many people..black, white, gray, purple, out there that do not want to further their lives..and these are probably the people you are talking about...i am a firm believer that one should not have to put their race on a college form or SAT form in advance..to me this would allow the best person to get what they rightfully deserve, no matter what their skin color. i know this is very difficult in the business world, since interviews are usually involved, but i would like to believe that in this day and age someones skills is what gets them an interview and gets them a job...and for that belief i hope one day affirmative action is not needed...and i find it very hard to believe someone would use race, especially if you are white, as an excuse why you did not get into a college...and i dont think anyone, except racists, like any struggle...it seems to me like you are looking for ways to say people are being racist with very little facts about life, just a broad knowledge and opinions that have no bearing on how people actually live or feel...if you read this much, i give you credit..because my mind is now fried

Well that's a great question. I am black and went to a University also and completed. I majored in Psychology and for my senior research I took on affirmitive action. I basically wanted to know did the teaching body at my school support it. P<.05. They didnt! My school was funded for supporting affirmitve action. Now I am from Ga can one imagine how I felt after learning that my senior year. I came in with scholarships and everything, yet underneath it all the professors (which were not reflective of the student body) believed that minority students were more likely to have been accepted to the university based on affirmative action. Could that have been why so many black students had difficulties? Why the drop out rate was higher for minorites? I even had a professor teaching that blacks were the most on welfare which was debunked over ten years ago. But he threatened to kick me out of class for correcting him. I was in a southern, redneck, good'ol boy confederate ran city. I had to deal with all kinds of ordeals that my counterpart didn't. And I am so glad that you took time out. Once, I enter grad school I am going to continue researching race relations in education because somethings quite weird when it come to education and race. I tried to develop the best form of application. By number rather than race. Race should not matter. I had white/black female x white/black male x control of number. Black males were the least likely to be accepted. The profiles that were controled all got accepted. Now...hmmm....all people had the same clubs, gpa, and activites. So how come acceptance varied so? I've seen it first hand. Minorites need help, yes but the system needs help too! Oh and for those who are ignorant. Women are considered minorites too! Check it out! If anyone wants some of the lit hit me up! I got the links still!

I don't feel that way, but I do have a theory.
Most people are miserable all the time.
Most people are unwilling to accept that they themselves are the cause of all their misery.
Instead, most miserable people are much more comfortable if they can find a reason why they are miserable.
If you're a white guy that can't get a job, and you're miserable, and you're unwilling to take responsibility for the fact that you are miserable, you might think something like "damn those blacks and affirmative action - I can't even get a job."
Notice that the blacks and affirmative action actually have nothing to do with the white guy's inability to get a job, but it makes him feel better about himself if he can find a reason - an external reason - why he can't find a job.
If it wasn't the blacks, maybe it would be the mexicans, or the damned corporations making so much money off hard working americans, or the religions, you get my drift.

I am not a racist either but there was a time when affirmative action and groups like the NAACP were needed. In 2006 we all have the opportunity to better ourselves through work. These programs and organizations seek to circumvent hard work in favor of skin color for the sake of "diversity" and the guise of "leveling the playing field". We all have the same opportunities, I used mine, I don't enjoy watching people struggle, I do enjoy watching people legitimately better themselves. If it is illegal to discriminate against someone because of skin color shouldn't it be illegal to show them preferential treatment because of it, ultimately discriminating against somebody else because they weren't the right color to fill the quota. Everyone can help themselves without the governments help.

Racism is so entrenched in our society, it's almost impossible to see all of the ways our society is affected by it, so I'm glad to see you ask for an intelligent discussion on this topic.
I respectfully disagree with "mixemup" who finds affirmative action programs unfair. This attitude assumes that racism doesn't exist and that everyone has an equal chance in our society. This isn't true. A recent study showed that resumes with names which sounded "black" received far fewer responses than resumes with "white" sounding names on them. (the same resumes were used for the study--only the names were changed.) Since we have racism, and since white people do benefit from racism even if they don't actively participate in it, we all have to do everything we can to dismantle racism and root it out of our society. Affirmative action programs are part of a solution, but by no means all that needs to be done.

Ok, I am not a "fan" of the NAACP, simply because they "try" and keep the masses DOWN! They are the ones that promote racism, more than anyone, so that they can keep themselves in business! (Lets figure, if there "wasn't" anymore racism, they would all be OUT OF A JOB!).
Now, affirmative action.
I am "ok" with this, unless, they have to take a certain number of blacks, and in order to "do that", they have to "let go" a certain number of white people, or what ever other nationallity or race, (I simply hate that word), in order to fulfill the quota.
Now, black people "themselves" are mostly responsible for 'not succeeding'!
Yes! I will say it again...
Black people are responsible themselves, for not succeeding!!
You take a father or mother, and thier children are doing great...
A lot of them start to heckle thier kids because they figure that they are starting to act WHITE!!!! Just because they want to suceed in thier studies... (mostly poor black neighborhoods). A good many of them are afraid to "get ahead" because people will think that they have capitulated to the White Man's way of thinking, and thats baaaaaaad to them!
So, what do they do? They FORCE them to fail and not succeed, so that they will remain BLACK!
A perfect example is Collin Powell. He is a succesfull black man, whom I admire for his tenacity and his ability to succeed and a lot of black folks call him an "Uncle Tom", just because he worked for the President of the United States! Now, how can you possibly defeat a 'mindset' such as this?
It will take a lot more years than you or I have, on this Earth, to get this "defeatism attitude" out of the poor uneducated black folks.
And a good part of it would be the "reeducation" of the NAACP about not hating everyone who isnt black... Or, the Black National Coolition. It seems everyone wants to show them "why" they cant succeed, but, they arent giveing them the tools TO SUCCEED!!!
That really makes my guts cramp up, knowing that I had black people who sat next to me, and they refused to learn, but, spouted thier BLACK POWER hatred in school, and failed miserably. They had the same opportunity that I had, and they wasted it. Simply, because they didnt want to appear WHITE!
I wish you well..

im not racist for the record. but i have friend that are black and white. my one friend wanted to go to the university of florida all of his life worked sooo hard. my black friend work hard as well and wanted the same goal of getting into uf. my white friend was in clubs, athletics, had over a 4.0 gpa. good sat scores......didnt get in. My black friend got in with around a 3.5 and significantly lower test scores. WHY? IS THAT FAIR? college acceptance should be based on gpa, sat's, ,and extra corriculars. All affirmative action is doing is commiting reverse racism.......in my opinion, and the way I see it.

At first I wasn't sure what you were getting at, the upfront question was a little jarring, but good for you as it made me read what you were saying. I agree, I have no doubt many whites want others of colour kept "in their place" and what better way then to play both sides against the middle. Call me lazy, shiftless and useless but in the same breath blame for trying to get ahead. It's a nasty cycle which many approve of, that way, blacks and others can be "kept in their place". Whites like that are incredibly racist.
For the record, I am of White European decent.
