My step-daughter has a UTI. She recently had oral surgery and has about 5 days worth of antibiotics left (she refused to take them any longer because she was tired of it) so we kept them around for a "just in case" situation. The pennicilin dose for the oral surgery was 500 mg x 4 a day. Can she take this same does for the UTI or should she reduce it?
Before you ask... the reason we have not called her doctor was because they would want her to come in (understandably) but she feels she cannot miss school as she's getting a "C" in one of her classes and is about ready to die over it.
Please only serious answers with thought put into it, not just "sure" or "no"

Her having a UTI right now has nothing to do with her not taking all her anti-biotics. Her surgury was back in February.

actually there is a easy way to cure a UTI (most of the time) the bacteria E-coli is the cause of the infection.
Vitamin C is water soluble so excess in your body is flushed out causing the urine to be too acidic for the E-coli to stay. I would recommend 2,000-3,000mg. And in most cases after 4 hrs the urgency and pain is gone.
Good Luck

This isn't a lecture but the parents definitely need to step in here on this one. A child doesn't get to make health decisions like this. No offense, but where is the discipline? I realize she is your step-daughter but someone needs to TELL her she is doing this. Drag her kicking and screaming if you have to. Tell her if she wants to feel better she has to go to the doctor. I would assume that maybe the dose for oral surger might be higher than for a UTI. Plus, she doesn't have enough left for a full course of anti-biotics for a UTI.
This is serious stuff. For one, not finishing a course of anti-biotics can lead to having strains that are resistant to anti-biotics. And a misdiagnosed UTI could lead to other problems. This is not a matter to let her get her way on.

First of all you are never supposed to stop taking any prescribed medication for any reason you are to finish it. There is no "just in case" You are not a doctor and you can not diagnose. Even if the doctor would prescribe the same thing there probably are not enough pills left for it to completely take care of the problem. How do you know for sure it is a UTI? It could be something entirely different. Don't self diagnose take her to the doctor she does not have to miss school in order to be seen. There are appointments available after school hrs and several doctors offices are open later on week nights to accommodate students and people who work.

Different bacterial infections need different antibiotics. Definitely don't use old antibiotics for something that they weren't prescribed for. Throw those old ones out and take you daughter to a doctor to get the proper prescribed ones. You should be able to schedule an appointment so that she doesn't miss a whole day of school.

You can go to a drug store or Wal Mart and buy some AZO, that helps with UTI's. When I had one, one of the nurses I worked with recommended that to see if it helped before I went to the doctor, and it worked for me. Hope this helps.

If she had taken all of her antibiotics she might not have a UTI now. She defiantly needs to see the doctor. If she can't miss school take her to one of those 24hour clinics.

PLEASE don't self diagnose. If you get the wrong antibiotic and/or doseage for the germ (which cannot be determined without seeing the doctor) there could be VERY serious consequences, up to and including death.
PLEASE, PLEASE see a doctor. Missing a couple hours of school won't hurt, the wrong drug or doseage will!
