Many lawyers will work pro bono (for free) in certain situations. And lawyers will often take a large civil case on contingency if they think there is a reasonable chance of covering their costs and expenses.

But generally, given the current state of the legal system, deep pockets will try to out-spend the other side, and win by attrition. And that's an expensive type of war that few people can easily afford.

I am a prepaid legal associate and for $26 a month you can have 24 hour/7 day a week access to the top lawyers in the country. It might be a good solution for you. Let me know if you are interested and I will email you a link that will explain the services.

What do you need him for?

If an accident the lawyer will wait until the end for his 1/3 cut......

Divorce...forget it they want their money up front and right now.....

Try making payment arrangements with the lawyer.....Like I said before you did not give enough information as to why you need a lawyer.

You may want to approach a larger law firm and ask them if they are interested in taking your case on a "pro bono" basis. Which means, they perform the work for free. Some state bar associations actually require attorney's to complete x number of hours a year of pro bono work. It is worth a try. The larger law firms are usually more willing to do this than a smaller one or two person firm.
