Well a cpu is the brain of the PC it loads your programs it calculates calculations and it is also split in sections. It loads your pc from the beginning it is a core component without it the computer wont even switch on.Obviously since it does all this work the faster it is the better.
Cpu also differ in sockets (how they connect to the motherboard) New Intel CPUs use the socket 775 whilst AMD ones are using socket AM2 obviously if a CPU is a different socket than the motherboard you cannot connect it to the motherboard.Different Sockets even have different heatsinks and fans and obviously different sockets differ in performance.Like the new 775 can handle 64 bit CPUs=64 1and0s at a time.So a cpu is very very important.

Central Processing Unit. I would love to be able to break down the cpu process, but it would prob be too extensive. Basically, the cpu handles the majority of the back end system calculations and transports the data on it's "buss" to and from the memory and/or hard drive. It is the brains of the computer for the most part (although, if there was enough RAM, and on-board cache, a machine could feasibly run strictly on RAM), but for now, it can't. :-)
