Depends on the person. Some get them for deeply personal reasons some just get them to get them. Mine are personal and mean certain things to me. Every time I see them I remember why I got them and what I was going through at that time. They remind me to learn from my experiences. Everybody is different. Some people get them to cover painful or disfiguring scars from surgury or accidents and so it means a lot to them and gives them confidence where before they were to shy or insecure because of the disfigurement. The "advantages" will differ for everyone.

If you research the shop, there is little to no danger in getting a tattoo. A good artist knows what they are doing. Also, most of the people who talk about regret as the biggest disadvantage are idiots who got a tattoo to be cool as soon as they turned 18 (or were even worse and got a boyfriend/girlfriend's name). As long as you know what you want, and you are sure it is something that you want forever, go for it. The biggest advantage for me was the feeling I got after getting my first one. I had always wanted tattoos, but never got up the nerve to do it. I finally got one and I LOVED it. Now I have around 40 hours worth of ink and I'm going in for more in a week or two.The biggest disadvantage is that they are addictive, and expensive if done right. Oh, and to the idea that it is a disadvantage that tats look bad when you are seventy: A) have you ever seen anyone that looked hot at 70? and B) I honestly don't think you will care what anybody thinks about your look/style when you're 70. I know that was long, but I hope it helps.

Sorry but for me there are no advantages to having a tattoo, I really do not like them on either men or women, but that's me and a lot of people do like them, I should imagine its very painful and you can end up with Hep C too and that is no advantage to anyone I would say, I honestly can't think of an advantage for a tattoo.

Self expression! A constant reminder where you were at that time in your life. Negative: Most people have a tendency to get something that has absolutely no meaning ... or something of importance at that time but is no longer of importance. Sometimes they just pick the wrong artists as well!

Connection to someone or something important. (That's why I have my two--the state I was born in over my heart and one that I share with my brother).

Decoration.

Showing what's really important to you.

Learning, *really* learning, the concept of enduring pain for a reward.
