Definitely St Kilda, It is reasonibly priced to live in. It has great restaurants bars and pubs. Really nice cafes and also has a beach. There are the famous cake shops on Ackland street. It is also alive with activity in the summer with lots of fun things to do. It is right next to Albert Park with all the sports facilities and the new olympic pool and complex based in the park as well. It is on the tram system and is only 10mins into the CBD but is also a nice walk into town through Albert park.

If you are a single or no-kid family St Kilda and South Yarra have clubs, shopping and real inner city feel. If you have young children and will be looking for private schools the eastern suburbs of Kew/Hawthorn/Camberwell are nice. A nice area is around Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn, which is a great shopping street, near a number of private schools like Trinity, Xavier and Ruyton and the Glenferrie Road Train is an express stop that gets you into CBD Melbourne in less than 15 minutes.

If you want to look at places by type you can go to one of the Australian newspaper's web sites (say The Age...www.theage.com.au) which has a real estate section that you can look/sort by own/rent, area, bedrooms etc to give you an idea.

South Yarra, Toorak, Port Melbourne, Hawthorne, Carlton, Fitzroy, Kew, Brighton, Camberwell, The Docklands are awesome now too... it's become its own little city, and is right next to the city.
Basically all the suburbs surrounding the main CBD city. The closer, the more exlusive, the more expensive, the better.
All houses on St. George's Street and around are absolutely gorgeous. Worth going for a drive just to check them out.

Affectionately named "Marvellous Melbourne" through the silver hurry of the 1850s, the title is still applied nowadays for Australia's next largest town Melbourne, a town that you could visited with hotelbye . Situated on the banks of the Yarra River, nearby the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is a modern town steeped in history. With large wealth made from the regional goldfields, majestic buildings were built through the entire city. Many of these structures still stand today, and Melbourne is considered as having more types of Victorian structure than any town in Australia. One place you cannot miss in your visit to Melbourne is the Southbank and Arts Centre Melbourne. Situated on the banks of the Yarra River that place is just a culturally rich attraction for visitors. Southbank promenade is full of indoor/outdoor cafés, restaurants, and live entertainment. Depends what you are looking for. If you have to commute into the city then get on a train line. The older suburbs like Brighton, Kew, Clifton Hill etc are lovely but expensive. Down the peninsula towards Moorabbin is nice, and up towards Doncaster. I would try and stay within the ring road, avoid the western suburbs, Craigieburn, Airport west and Springvale and parts of Frankston.

Nunnawadding, Tralagon,Dandenong,South Croyden, Bayswater.
Then you have the BIG suburbs, like St. Kilda, Geelong, Hawthorne etc.
I lived in Nunnawadding and South Croyden for 10 years and my dad has lived in Tralagon for 30 ! You'll find these less restrictive and easy communicable into Melbourne.
Good luck and G'Day !
