This question reminds me of a scene in the movie "Life of Brian" (Monty Python). The cast asks "What have the Romans done for us?"

Well, aqueducts, government, codified law, paved roads, language.
The Roman Empire went from what is now Italy over to what is now Great Britain.

So, my answer is the Romans.

It's difficult to say. The Romans copied their mythology from the Greeks, but they made the conversion to Chrisitianity. The Romans absorbed something from every culture they overtook and that makes them very important, but it's hard to say whether they had more of an impact than the cultures they borrowed from because the other cultures were the originals, but the Romans made aspects of those cultures popular. I would say the Romans probably had the biggest impact, because had they not taken some aspects of other cultures, these aspects would have been lost to the world forever.

Wow, what an incredibly great question! I mean, the Greeks gave us philosophy, but the Romans taught us debauchery. Really a tough call, too close for my blood!
