My six year old has a homework question that says draw something that is the same mass as you.

Firstly what is mass in terms that I can explain to a six year old.

Secondly what is a likely household object or something around us that would be the same mass?

I was hopeless at maths in school!

Mass = weight/ g

where g is the gravitational acceleration (for earth approx 9.8 ms^2)

So everything on earth that weighs the same has the same mass.

Probably a bookcase weighs the same!!

For your six year old mass is the same as weight.
(Scientifically it's not the same. For your purpose, the mass of anything stays the same, while its weight depends on where it is. On earth it will be a certain no. of kg. On the moon it would weigh only 1/6 (I think). In other words weight is dependent on the gravitational pull on it.

Mass is simply how much "stuff" something is made up of.

As for something of the same mass, I really don't know. It's been years since I was 6, and I was pretty small for my age. Perhaps a desk or dresser?

At his age, mass is weight. Find something that weighs the same as him and have him draw a picture of it.
