ok, i am a junior in high school and on the varsity football team. i am 2nd string (i dont play alot) the new coach is a an as*hole. not many kids on the team like him, the previous coach who retired everybody liked. we are playing a pretty tough team this week. and on the jv (junior varsity) team 2 of the starters got suspended, so they can't play this week. so jv only has 22 kids on their roster rigtht now. my coach TOLD me and another 2nd string kid that we Had to practice and play with the jv this week. we were both pretty angry about it, escpecailly b/c we had to practice with them. i didnt want to do it so i asked if he could put someone else down there besides me, (we have almost 40 kids on varsity) he said no and started to get mad so i just left, that was about 55 minutes ago, i have not gone to practice, and i don't know what to do. please dont leave a stupid remark like haha or you should have just done it.

I understand, but if you're not starting on varsity, you probably should play jv if the coach thinks that you should. He might be trying to get you some experiance because he intend to play you more. My junior year a similar thing happened. I started on varsity at defensive tackle, but the coach also wanted me to start on both offense and defense for the jv team (which played the night before). Being one of the best players at the jv game, I usually ended up playing just about every play of the game. I would be so tired and banged up from Thursday that I couldn't play my best on Friday nights when it counted. Looking back, it was rough, but it did make me a better player.
My recommendation is to go back to practice and talk to your coach. I would start out by appologizing for walking out and for missing practice. Let him know that you were disappointed and frustrated when he told you that you would not be practicing with the varsity. Continue by saying that you lost your cool and you hope that he is willing to give you another chance because being part of the team is important to you. You're going to have to accept any punishment (sprints or suspensions) that he proposes. Look him in the eye when you talk to him and shake his hand regardless of the outcome.

*I obvious answered before you put you update in. Go talk to the coach. Tell him what you told us and hope that he will let you back on the team. If he doesn't, chalk it up as a learning experience, if he does let you back on, give yourself more practice time and hope that you improve. I guesss you can disregard the other stuff I said because being on Varsity is what is more important to you then play time and improvement.*
Okay, being on varsity and then being put down on JV sucks. There is no other way to put it, it just does. First ask yourself if you are being hard on this coach because you liked the other one so much. If it is just that he is a hard man, then you are pretty much stuck out. Next ask yourself if you are in love with being on Varsity and not being able to play much is O.K. If you love the game and want more playtime then moving to JV might not be such a bad idea. I mean you can't get any better sitting on the sidelines and after walking out on the coach you are going to be seeing a lot more of the sidelines then you did before. Second, you got to wonder if he is even going to let you back on the Varsity team after walking out and not showing up for practice. Go to the JV coach and expain what happened and why you did it. See if he can go with you to talk to the Varsity coach. Explain to him why it is so important to you to be on the Varsity team, it may be because you want an athletic scholorship or something. But even JV players get looked at by scouts and if you are really good and the coach is just a jerk you will really shine on JV. Sometimes really good players get sidelined because of coaches that are jerks.
But you really have to ask yourself what is more important, playing or sitting on the sidelines watching. I would do you best on JV and make the coach realize that he made a mistake. Ask yourself, 2nd string Varsity or 1st string JV?

So let me get this straight, you play second string on the Varsity team and they want to demote you to JV for this one game, but you don't want to be demoted, so you are refusing to go to practice. Is that right? Will you get to start on the JV team? Why don't you want to go play on the JVs? Does it embarrass you to have to move down and play with younger players or what? I don't see the problem, if you like to play football, just go help the JVs out. It might make you look bad if you don't, if you care about stuff like that. Of course, I am just a girl who has never been on a football team. I just love to watch it.

Go to JV practice.
Show your coach that you're a team player.
It may be embarrassing, but you should put your pride aside and do what is right for the team.
By not going to JV, you're just going to make yourself look bad in the coach's eyes and mess up any chance you have of actually playing on the varsity team.

THE VARSITY COACH IS IN CHARGE OF THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM, AND IS DOING WHAT HE FEELS IS BEST FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED. YOU SHOULD JUMP AT THE CHANCE TO GET SOME REPS IN A REAL GAME SITUATION, EVEN IF IT IS JV'S. IF I WERE THE COACH, AND I TOLD YOU TO DRESS OUT AND PRACTICE WITH THE JV'S FOR THE WEEK, AND YOU REFUSED TO, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE THE CHANCE TO PLAY EITHER. I WOULD SEND YOU PACKING. IF THE COACH IS THAT BAD TO PLAY FOR, STICK IT OUT THROUGH THE END OF THE YEAR AND DON'T PLAY NEXT YEAR. YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR THE TEAM.

maybe they wanted to get you more reps at your position so you can be better at varsity. your dumb for doing so. even if you are better than the jv kids at least you would have a good game and make a lot of tackles/catches or whatever position you play. football is fun you should wanna play as much as possible regardless of what team its on

Happened to me to. When you don't like your coach, it ruins the whole experience. I cussed mine out and quit the team. And ya know what? I was so glad I did. The whole game is bullshit!
Try playing on an outside of school team. You will find there is a lot less of the pressure and no "popularity" issues, and the kids really want to play. It's way better.

Firstly, go to practice if it's in the realm of possibility.
Later, I would try to get in touch with one of the coach's superiors, or other school board people who will have either 1) some leeway in changing the situation altogether or 2) a better understanding of why the coach is making you do this (maybe the coach has his facts screwy and doesn't know how to fix some problem situation in a more tactful/diplomatic manner) so that you are better equipped to come up with some kind of compromise.
You might also try to first build a support network to back you on your position (other players, parents, etc.) before you go in to address his superiors.
Good luck with this!

football obviously isnt your sport so you really dont have much to lose so try this..go to varsity practice if coach tells you to go to jv say "no im on THIS team i MADE this team, im practicing and playing with this team . thats it. be firm and dont throw in any ultimatums , let it be on him if he wants to force you off the team..it doesnt sound like much loss if you dont play that much...people will respect you and you wont have to go through any embarassment and you might get freed up to try something else that youre better at...football is for meatheads anyways

First, grow some balls. Every coach I ever had was though but that made me a better player. Second, the coach is always right. If your coach tells you to put on a skirt and grab some pom-poms you better do it. This kind of attitude may be why you're 2nd string and if you want to play as a senior you better stop questioning him. It's time to start growing up. I don't particularly like my boss but he is my boss so I do what he says.
