As with almost every movie, the original was much better. Don't get me wrong I love Johnny Depp and he is an amazing actor, but Gene WIlder just has that part. The second one fails to capture the magic and essence of the first movie.
I think the second would have been an amazing movie by itself; however, it is impossible to avoid comparison with the first movie and when it is compared to the first, it just doesn't live up. That first movie had that magic that the second one lacks. Depp is an amazing actor, but I feel that his rendition of the character Willy Wonka is more concerned with being looney and off-the-wall than the mysterious and intriguing character Gene Wilder made him out to be.

Although the second was a decent movie, I would have to undoubtedly say that it pales in comparison to the first.

They are both good...I couldn't pick one over the other, but I love the book and both movies.

For 1971, Willy Wonka was a great movie and I think it is still a great movie.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, went more with the book which was a definate plus...I could think of no one better than Tim Burton to direct it and Danny Elfman made the songs directly from some of the lyrics Roald Dahl had written as Oompa Loompa songs.

People called Depp's portrayal of Wonka weird, but if you read the book, Wonka IS weird.

I like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory better. Gene Wylder is such a great actor no one can ever replace him as Willy Wonka, not even Johnny Depp.

My favorite of the two is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. Burton just didn't achieve what the original did.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory...even though I like Johnny Depp, the little oompa loompa guy really creeped me out. I liked the songs as well in the original one.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - Johnny Depp's Wonka was too immature and not as suave and mysterious as Gene Wilder's version. Plus, worst of all, they totally screwed up the Oompa Loompas look, and their songs.
