I know it is a matter of preference, but what is most common? Semi-gloss would be my bet.

Oh I am putting up new trim, S4S. So there are no imperfections to speak of.

Exterior Semi-Gloss will work just fine. Don't make the job anymore difficult than it already is.

Your bet is good but not just preference- it is also because semi-gloss cleans better.

Another paint I have REALLY fallen in love with for exterior (if you are in an area where mold is a problem) is Zinnser Permawhite exterior paint. It is a high build self priming mold resistant paint. They back it up with a 5 year NO mold warranty.

I have now used it on at least a dozen homes and the people are thrilled. I put it on my own house about 11 months ago and it is as perfect as the day I did it.

Try it...

It's not only a matter of preference. If the surface has a lot of imperfections, you will want to use flat outdoor paint because gloss and semi-gloss tend to make the imperfections more visable. If the surface is in good condition, semi gloss is the most common.

As a general contractor I prefer a gloss finish. It makes the trim easier to wash and will not gather quite as much dust and dirt.
