Just about any desktop will do, just stick with something that has a year warranty.

(P.S. I've had my HP Desktop for 4 years.)

I recommend HP/Compaq.

Apple/Macintosh (But Pricey.)

Stay away from Dell (90 day warranties for a reason)
Stay away from Sony (Electrical problems)
Stay away from Acer.

Emachines is ok for basic stuff, regardless of what people will tell you.

Make sure it has a minimum of 1 Gigabyte of RAM, an 80+ gigabyte hard drive. (really, you'll probably want at least a 120 gigabyte) CD/DVD burner. Ethernet 10/100 Card. Basic graphics card will be fine, just about any modern processor will be fine. (stay away from celeron. Kinda the ghetto processor)

You'll want it to be able to expand to 2 gigabytes of Ram (Windows Vista is going to be even more of a memory hog than Windows XP)

And that's about it unless you play games, that's a whole nother story. hehe.

Check Lenovo for laptops (good system, good price) For PC with a reasonable price go to DELL, for performance and power Alienware just rock but they are a bit pricey.

Talkin about processors right now Intel Core 2 Duo is the best.

~ It all depends on what kind of work do you do?

~ If you give us details, I'll be more precise on my recommendation.
