The most recognized certification is CELTA, through England's Oxford University. There are many schools here in the US that offer the CELTA certification course. Second is a TESOL school and a TESOL certification.

Check out Dave's ESL Cafe at http://eslcafe.com There is much info on that site. There is help there on finding schools, jobs etc.... Also a great discussion forum.

I went to Hat Yai, Thailand to take a 4 week ESL teacher course at Stamford College. This was a very practical course. I not only learned some English and teaching techniques but did so in a typical environment for a ESL teacher in Asia.

We did observations and practice teaching at all levels, pre-K to TOEFL/IELTS with some trade and business school classes also. We did have one Saturday and all Sundays off.

This is quite inexpensive with the transportation cost being more than half of the total cost. The course is ~$640, apartment ~$120, food ~$130, books ~$60, airfare ??? depends. They do recruit new teachers right out of this class if you are ready to make a move to Thailand.

I just just checked their website and find that they also have the classes in Phuket. Not sure if Phuket would be better. There would be more distractions and they may not have all of the school associations that they have in Hat Yai for observations and practice teaching.

If you go, say hi to Alan for me.

If you want to go to Asia, do a TEFL or TESL certificate in your home country. I'll leave it up to you to research the difference between those programs. IF YOU HAVE EU CITIZENSHIP and want to teach in Europe, do a CELTA in the country you want to work in. There are virtually no legal jobs teaching English for non-EU citizens in Europe. Trust me on this.

Make sure your TEFL/TESL course covers grammar and includes at least six hours of supervised teaching practice.
