I applied for a job, but did not pass a background check. How can I find out what HR sees and correct it if it is wrong?

If you signed a release form with the company that you considered employment and they refused your application due to your background check. You have the right to obtain a free copy of your report from the agency if requested within 60 days. The company you applied should give you the address of their 3rd party(the background check agency)
The company should of disclose this law to you under the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.

And you can dispute any information that you believe is incorrect.

That really all depends on what tool they are using to check it. I know a lot of states have a paid site that HR companies can log on to and get a general "state / federal based" background check. I'm not sure what your company would use or what information they would find. My bet is that if you did something that ever became public information (anything over a class C misdemeanor), then they would be able to see it.

I used that website http://www.echeck.pcti-system.com .. the one referenced by that detective guy. I found exactly what I was looking for. So much for Mr Right, or rather Mr Convicted Felon with 2 Liens against him totaling over 30,000$ and an ex-wife I never knew about!! Thank God I found out the truth before it was too late. We were almost engaged!!

Go to your local Sheriff's Dept and see of they will pull your criminal history for you. They do that here where I live for $6 if you go in person with a photo ID.

If it was something a previous employer said or something in your credit history this won't help. This will only give your criminal history.

Write a letter requesting what information they gathered and have it sent certified mail.
