I will tell you one of the reasons why I love this country. Everyone is welcome here. Sure their are idiot racists and sexists and all of the other ists but they represent a tiny fraction of the American people. Anyone can be an American. This is truely the greatest country on Earth.

I love the idea in which this country stands for.

I love the idea of "everyone is welcome".

I love the idea that we have people willing to die to protect this country, its people and its freedoms.

However, today, its all starting to be just "ideas" no action on it.

They say this country represents freedom...... but we are loosing more and more of our freedoms so many people died to protect and give us.

They say this country welcomes every one, but now our country is picking and choosing who can come and who can't. I believe you should have some checks (for terrorism sake) but don't turn away Muslims, just because they are Muslim.

People have, are and will die to protect this country, its people and its freedoms, but today there is a second agenda tacked on. Our soldiers are out there in Iraq fighting for the greed of this administration, and they tell themselves it for freedom, protection of America and her people just so they can make it through the battles, death and destruction. They have to, because the soldiers know about this administrations second agenda (greed) but as soldiers they can't do anything about it! Its sad so many brave men and women are dying for this administrations greed in Iraq.......

I love this country despite its faults, America has great potential to bring itself back up to where it used to be, and I love our soldiers and pray for their saftey, but I don't support this war in Iraq, or this Administration.

Is the United States of America the greatest country in the world?

This is a difficult question on many different levels. I will, however, tell you what I know. This, however, is the perspective of a conservative, church-going, low-ranking military member with 6 children and a mortgage. This is by no means an exact comparison, it is extremely general.

The greatest meals on the planet are to be had in Italy. Not just food, but a MEAL, consisting of the food and the conversation and the all around atmosphere.

The greatest amount of fun on the planet tends to be had with people from Greece. I have never met a people who hold joy in there hearts so dearly.

The greatest work ethic tends to come from Africa.

The most beautiful women tend to be Latin American.

The most religious tend to be Hebrew.

The friendliest people are Russian.

The question is obtuse. There is no greatest country on the planet. That would be like saying, "which is the greatest of your children?" Nations and people are what we make of them. I have travelled and made many friends. All of them are warm people who love and share and laugh anfd cry and do the exact same things that Americans do. They try to make it from paycheck to paycheck and support their families.

The best I can say is this. I have been around the world and seen more than most of the people who live in the town where I grew up ever will. I've seen military parades in the former Soviet Republics. I've seen both the Blue Mosque and St Peter's Basilica at dawn. I've visited the remains of moorish conquests and seen the Pope...twice. I've seen beauty and tragedy in all of its forms, but one thing will never change. The best thing about travelling the world will always be coming home. Yes, America is the greatest country in the world.

Oh, and it is the only one with Taco Bell.

I believe that in the 1960s, despite the problems of a disastrous war in Southeast Asia and overt racism, there was a prevalent belief that people of conscience could (and would) create a culture that honored talent, intelligence and decency. America just had to pull together and take on the challenges. It's more of a struggle today because, in spite of all the patriotic language, we are not really committed to being great if that interferes with being comfortable and entertained.

While I'd agree that I like the diversity of cultures and people in America, I'm agast at the actions that our country has taken in the last few years. So- no. I don't think that America is the greatest country. Perhaps we used to be, but that day has passed.

Of course this is the greatest country. Its just that our current leadership has hijacked our moral direction and made us into a world dominating imperial power.

Take back the government in '06!
