If bleach doesn't work, try vinegar or baking soda. Or leave it filled with bleach water over night and then run it. And never, never leave the lid down. It looks bad but when I got my latest washer (now 5 years old) I started leaving the lid up when I got a tiny whiff of the musty smell you are talking about and it is good to go now.

the bleach, vineagar and baking soda answers are all good, but that's only a quick fix. One thing that wasn't mentioned is to leave the lid open on you washing machine between loads. If you close it right after emptying it, it's not exposed to air, and all the moisture left from the last use just sits in there & molds. So leave it open to dry. that should take care of the problem.

Fill your machine with water, pour 2 cups of bleach in it and run it just like you would a load of laundry. make sure that you're not just leaving your clothes in it too long after they wash, this will also leave a stale or musty odor.

My kids are bad to start a load and then forget it - I find it the next day all groaty -- the best fix ever is to pour in a half cup to one cup of Mr. Clean or Lysol all purpose cleaner. (I really like the blue Mr. Clean best - it smells nicest.) Then give it a good run on hot and an extra rinse. It should fix things up fine. It will also get the eww smell out of the clothes.

My mom uses bleach! She uses a capful and runs the machine on the rinse cycle! She does this at least once a week!
