A pelvic exam with a PAP smear is very important. I probably would be dead right now if I didn't have a regular one every year. I have a close call with cancer of the cervic. Luckily with my yearly check up they found it in time. At another time I thought I was pregnant turnedout I had a tumor on my left fallopian tube which could have meant that I would have had to have have everything removed if it had been cancer. Again luckily only my left fallopian tube was removed and I was still able to have a child a few years later. This was when I was 26 years old. I am now 35 and alive.

Yes, females should start to have them every year at age 18 or when they become sexually active, whichever happens FIRST. The first time going to the OBGYN is always scary, and never fun, but it can mean the difference between living and dying. Just try to relax when you go, and I promise it will get better the more times you go...never fun, but just routine. Go to a doctor you feel comfortable w/, which may mean scheduling an appointment before the actual exam appointment to discuss what is going to take place, etc.

Yes, you should start having PAP's done when you become sexually active. They don't hurt, just aren't much fun.

Yes definitely.... they suck and are a little humiliating the first time, but it's totally worth it and after you've done it for a few years it will be like a routine.
