This is a VERY tough field to get into in the UK or the USA. Agents only accept a limited number of clients and you have to have some credentials and be VERY TALENTED. You can find agents on line by doing a search. But beware, many are unscrupulous and again, the really above board ones only accept a handful of clients, it that. The world of screen writing (script writing) is expecially tough and very few people make it. You need to have a lot of experience and it's hard work to turn out a professional treatment (form you need for submitting work). Also, knowing the "right" people helps a lot. Good luck.

First, DO NOT go to newyork literary agency. They are one of the biggest scam agencies out there. (Do a quick google search.)
Second, script writing is the hardest type to break into, and very few agents represent scripts-- they're much more into books and their contacts are all editors with publishing houses, not hollywood type contacts.
For regular literary agents...i always cringe at how people say you have to 'know somebody' to get an agent. YES, its tough. YES, its competitive. You have to study the craft and be good at what you do-- and that might take a few years. But if you're a good writer, you will get an agent. I know-- i have one.

To avoid those scam companies and agents, start by checking out the website Preditors and Editors:
http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/
This has an extensive list of agents (plus publishers, contests, workshops, etc) and warnings against any that have displayed unscrupulous behaviors.
Also, check out the book from Writer's Market called the "Guide to Literary Agents". It will help you find agents who represent the genres that you write in.
Good luck!

Try the Writers and Artists Yearbook - very useful and contains a lot of information on how to get an agent / submit scripts or manuscripts etc. It's available in most good bookstores or from Amazon. Good luck - you've chosen a very, very tough field.

I emailed a company to find info like this out, and they emailed me back telling me to get the Yellow Book. This book is extremely helpful in every aspect of writing. I found it in the reference area of the library.
Good Luck
