I think there needs to be more of a graduated scale than we use. For example if you make $9,560 you are below the poverty line but if you make $10,000 you're not. You're still poor and can't afford to live. So we need to call these numbers impoverished, then have poor, then have financially compromised or something at about twice those numbers and give a certain amount of assistance to all those people. We should use a system of need (met vs. unmet) to see who is actually being deprived of basic needs because its a lot more than the government would like people to know. People should not be penalized for working and that's all the current system does. So yes, I'm with you, its a farce.

What the heck are they doing. You can make 13 to $14,000 per year flipping hamburgers at McDonalds. If you're only making $9,570 you're probably not doing much.
The more you pay for doing nothing the more nothing will get done.
