Hi, I teache history in 7th grade. I was wondering as I was teaching, in what period of history (- 8000?, -10 000) was the link made between sexual intercourse and pregnancy. Hard question, I know thanks in advance!

I think that even in the Epic of Gilgamesh we have references to this connection, so it predates "history."
Because of how much pregnancy impacts us, lowering our mobility, causing so much trouble with childbirth, I'm thinking that maybe that awareness is something that developed alongside bipedalism and enlarged brains. Over time it became something that had to be taught, but before we started settling down there had to have been some awareness to assist with planning. Else those big brains of ours would have been a waste.
And yes, I know that there are at least a couple of indigenous people who remain unaware (or were unaware until recently) of the causal relationship between intercourse and pregnancy. But I think that most groups throughout history and prehistory had a good idea about it, at least among the educated.

Hi. Judging from some of the fertility artifacts (small statues, pictographs etc.) it was prehistoric, therefore hard to pinpoint. Not for your class, but have you ever seen the movie "Quest for Fire"? The issue of human sexuality was addressed in the film, which was supposed to occur about 80,000 years ago. Great movie, real time fire gets made, and the languages were written by Anthony Burgess (of Clockwork Orange fame).

over the years people most likely made the connection of large bellys after intercourse and birth after some time of having a large belly
