Your brain becomes MUSH from all the mindless crap that the TV spews out, and you get the urge to buy a bunch of useless junk that is always and forever "new and Improved"
At least try to mute or turn off the commercials. Give your poor brain that much of a break at least. TV is bad enough, commercials are like toxic waste for your brain.

I guess the only negative effect tv and commercials can have on an individual is that after watching them for a while you really become more in tune with how crazy and corrupt our world is. You have to also take into consideration that 99% of what you see and hear on tv is not real. Don't don your superman suit and your bat man cape and try to rid the world of all the evils that dwell in it. We have to learn to take one day at a time.

Other than the other good answers people have given, I learned years ago that our brains work on 60 cycles per second and so did tv projection (flicker rate). It then becomes too easy to zone into the tv and zone out life around you.

I truly believe television portrays a skewed image of reality. Too much TV watching and not enough real-world living can definately distort a person's sense of what is real or how things should be.
