Have you tried the windows logo key, located between cntrl and alt keys. This may give you the program lists you need.

I am curious -
how did you get to the internet and ask this question if your computer does not work? May be.... you used friend's computer...? Just wondered.
Anyway, did you activate XP after installing? Icons will show up only upon activation. If not, use the XP installation disk and boot into the CD (Bios setting necessary) then follow the prompts where it will ask you to choose R for recovery. Do you remember your sys admin pwd.? Then, it will recover and you are off to the races.
If that does not work, you have to do more: after pwd,
At c:\windows, type bootcfg/rebuild (enter)
Add installation to boot list ? [Y]
Enter load identifier: Windows XP Professional (if it is Home edition, Then put in Home)
Enter OS load options? (do nothing here... leave blank)
Restart.
If the boot.ini is not correct, then you probably have to modify. Go to MS Knowledgebase to know how.
Alternate method:
after admin pwd; type this:
expand e:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_
C:\windows\system 32
overwrite? [Y]
Exit.
Reboot.
It should work now.

Try turning your computer off leave it for 10 secs turn it back on. As soon as you turn it on Hold Escape & you should be able to start up in safe mode. don't worry if the screen looks strange that's how it is surppose to be the you should be able to do a system restore.

i'm guessing your explorer.exe procedure is corrupt. this would have got here about many various recommendations. i have not tried to interchange the explorer.exe report using the installation disk reproduction; this would artwork. the finest project to do to be certain you nonetheless have an OS once you're executed is to get a second bootable HDD, installation your OS onto it, installation your cutting-edge HDD as a second/slave force and pull all of your own archives off of it. I easily can no longer imagine of yet otherwise to get authentic of entry for your report device to interchange the explorer.exe report. reliable success!

Windows explorer isn't running - probably a virus. Shut off the power (probably press and hold the on button) and, if you get it to boot up properly, immediately run anti-spyware (spybot search and destroy, adaware are free).
