It stands for "fidei defensor", which is Latin for "defender of the faith", and is one of the British Monarch's titles, granted to Henry VIII by the Pope, after he attacked Martin Luther's ideas on Protestantism (ironically, Henry VIII went on the abolish Catholicism in England for some 300 years)

Defender of the Faith
This was granted to Henry VIII by the pope after he had written a book entitled "Defending the Faith" It is a unique title and all English Monarchs have held since despite Henry's split from the Roman Catholic church and his daughter's ex-communication by the pope.

"Fidei Defensor" = Defender of the Faith.
The Pope awarded this title to Henry VIII (and to his heirs in perpetuity, I suppose) for writing a document proving that Christianity was better than other faiths, although probably one of Henry's Archbishops wrote it for him. Henry was furious with the Pope for this. The title was useless; what he had really wanted and expected was a decree of divorce from Katherine of Aragon. Pretty soon he renounced the Pope's authority in England, made himself the head of the Church, and gave himself the divorce.

Fidei defensor - Latin for Defender of the Faith, a title still held by the English monarch, although the faith he/she defends is now simply Christianity and not, as originally, the Roman Catholic version thereof.

it means defender of the faith, it was a special currency donated to the poor by the Anglican (church of England) churches. the church of England was a split of from the catholic faith created my Henry the eighth basically so that he could get a divorce! the church of England is very similar to catholic apart from the fact that it is run by the king/queen of England.
