If the water heater shows no signs of rusting thru and still heats at a good rate. It is not necessary to change it. Most people wait until it leaks of does not heat properly to change it out. If you are concerned that is is too old then by all means change it out, newer modles are meor efficient that ones that are 26 years old. Also look at a self cleaning type there is less of a chance of failure due to build up in the bottom of the tank. Gene

never ever in my life...(i'm 50) had an electric water heater last even 10 years! so anything over that was super...
