Your best bet is to track your daily basal body temperature. If your cycle is irregular, then perhaps your ovulation is as well. I would chart your temps so you can see if/when you are ovulating each month. You can chart for free at fertilityfriend.com, as well as get information about charting your temp. When your temp rises 0.5 degrees F, then you ovulated. In the meantime, I would have sex every other day from day 10 of your cycle until day 20 until you know when you are ovulating.
There are other signs of ovulation, such as ovulation pains in the lower abdomen on either side and cervical mucus that looks like raw egg whites. I'm not that in tune with my body to know the others. I've heard of a book called "Taking charge of your fertility" by Toni Weschler. I haven't read it, but I've heard it's very informative and has great reviews on Amazon.com.

By charting your cervical mucus and BBT and by using OPKs. Ovulation predictor kits are expensive though if you are irregular because you would have to use them almost daily for a long period of time. Charting your basal body temperature (BBT) and cervical mucus is free except for the cost of the thermometer (about $7 to $10). For more info visit the website below.

It is difficult to do. You can take and chart your Basal Body Temperature every morning and look for patterns, but it might take you 3 or 4 months to see a pattern. You might need to see a doctor, medication might be necessary to regulate your ovulation.

I know for some people this is kind of goss, but it works. It is how I knew when to concive my first.
Make sure you notice what you're discharge looks like in a regular day. When you notice it is kind of sticky or tacky and reminds you of whitish booiges then that is the perfect time to concive. But if you notice it is slimey and runny you just missed it. Also look for abdominal cramps on one side or a twinge, and breast tenderness.
Hope this helped

I saw a test, advertized on t.v. you take at home that helps predict when you ovulate. Or ask your obgyn to do a test.

I bought the ovualtion pee sticks. They seemed to work, and my cycle is pretty irregular. Works the same as a pregnancy test, just pee on it :-)
