If you're after the computer game, the original game was run on an Apple II computer, which came out in 1977. A copy of the original game can be played online at Virtual Apple ( http://www.virtualapple.org/oregontraildisk.html ) if you want to see the very first version (and the copyright date shows on the screen when you start it).
As to the actual trail, the "trail" started in 1841 but by far the largest migrations started in 1843. It continued to be used even after the railroads were developed by people emigrating to Washington, Oregon and California who couldn't afford transport by rail. The "End of the Trail" interpretive center has a lot of information on their website, and there are a host of others too.
