The expected lifespan of the fans, the drives, really any of the components is such that you should be able to leave your PC - ANY PC, desktop or laptop on from the minute you get it until it becomes too obsolete to use (the software is another matter, of course), provided you take steps to avoid overheating. Basically that means it needs to be able to breathe. If you are going to put your laptop in a bag and take it somewhere, shut it off. If you're going to be working at your desk for any length of time get something (such as a docking station or port replicator if you're using an external monitor or keyboard, or even just a piece of wood) to lift the back edge up so air can flow underneath. Whatever you use should extend all the way across so the PC doesn't wobble, though, 'cuz wobbling is annoying.

I use a computer at our local public library to access the web. Some are laptops and are on 12 hours a day. but they are like anything else. The more you use it the quicker it wears out. Laptops are no exception.

Any computer needs a rest now and then. You should shut it down over night from time to time. As long as the fan is working it shouldn't overheat.
