Is there a law that says that if someone interviews you for a permanent/direct position they are obligated to give you a reason for not hiring you if they chose not to hire you?

in CA, an employer does not need to give you a reason for not hiring a particular person.

No, they don't have to give you a reason, but if you ask them, and ask them to be 100% honest, they may tell you something (or beat around the bush). I do know that former employers cannot tell an interviewing employer why you quit or were fired from that job because its slander. In my opinion, if you feel that you did your best in the interview and you were honest, if they have some problem with you, then you wouldn't want to work for them anyhow.

There should NEVER be such a law unless the American people vote to take down the Stars and Stripes and raise the hammer and sickle.

That would be like you having to write out a report and turn it into the government, stating a reason you that you don't want to go out with someone on a date and facing a penalty if it was determined by someone else that the reason wasn't valid.

They don't even have to contact you ever again...this is real tacky but some companies don't even tell you that you didn't get the job. Not very considerate since you spent the time interviewing but that's life. Better not to work for a company like that.

I don't think so. They don't hire you because they hire someone else who for whatever reason they feel is better qualified.
