The prosecutor files the claim against the criminal defendant, and acts as the representative of the govt in pursuing that claim. This role is equivalent to that of the plaintiff's attorney in a civil matter.

He or she is responsible for charging an individual to the fullest extent of the law. They need to compile evidence and find witnesses. They need to prove to the jury that they are guilty and out manuever the defense attorney.
