I have sailed numerous times on a submarine through the area considered the "Bermuda Triangle" and in charge of ship's navigation equipment which always went haywire on these occassions I would definetely say there are real effects this area has on magnetic or electro-magnetic equipment.
As far as aliens visting this location and kidnapping people...no.
This is no strange phenoma it is simply physics an electric and magnetic field are 90 degrees apart. Therefore you have the poles and the "bermuda Triangle", there is also another electro-magnetic anomaly almost directly opposite this, somewhere in the south-pacific

The idea is certainly popular.

There are a few physical possibilities why that area might be responsible for ships sinking / aircraft disappearing.

One possibility is that the floor of the ocean may have a shape which under certain conditions can focus waves at one or more locations, so that freak waves are generated. This is a bit like a lens focussing light or like the 'whispering gallery' in which it possible to hear conversation from the far side of a large room.

Another possibility is that the ocean floor may be releasing gas bubbles. If a large amount of gas rises through the water, it forms an emulsion of water and gas which has a lower density than the surrounding sea water, so offering less buoyancy for ships and boats. Sailing into such a low density area, a ship would go straight under without warning.

The last possibility I can think of is that there may be some magnetic anomaly in the area which makes compasses misread so that aircraft and boats get lost. For an aircraft that could result in it running out of fuel somewhere out at sea.

The Bermuda Triangle (also known as Devil's Triangle) is a nearly half-million square-mile (1.2 million km2) area of ocean roughly defined by Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Bermuda Triangle has become popular through representation by the mass media, in which it is a paranormal site in which the known laws of physics are violated and altered.

Also known as the Devil's Triangle and Sargasso Sea. It's an area of water between Cuba, Bermuda and Florida, I think. It has a reputation of causing planes to crash and ships to sink. Theory is that there could be some weird magnetic field from a meteor impact (or underwater space aliens, yikes!)

Yes the Bermuda triangle it self it real.... however if you are talking about the disappearances that have occur ed there... well that's a whole other story... there are two sides to the stories..

Side 1) the disappearance can be blamed on weather

Side 2) its real...

Watch the Discovery channel i think it is they aired it last night.

There is an area on the world map that maps out an area called "The Bermuda Triangle"

I had the same question, I read a couple of books and various stories on the Bermuda triangle, but still it's a mystery and no one knows the precise answer.

That depends. Its a real geographic place. It really does have a lot of disappearances. But its also covering the main shipping lanes in the Atlantic so most ships go through it. There isn't any higher a rate of ships sinking there than there is anywhere else.
There's no realistic reason to think that anything odd is going on there.

No. Absolutely not.

i.e. if you're referring to the supernatural explanations referred to in the 70's pop culture book, The Bermuda Triangle.

There are a lot of wrecks in the area for reasons which are much more realistic.

It is a hypothetical triangle...The area was just suggested follwoing incidence of a number of lost ships, mathematicians calculated the approximate area and came up with a suggestion that this area was a triangle...It might actually be a square or a circle, who knows!
