Mariah is a variant of "Maria". This name, like the English equivalent "Mary" goes back to Hebrew "Miriam", the name of Moses' sister. This is thought to go back to an Egyptian original meaning something like "love" or "beloved".

Not kidding. In the movie "Paint Your Wagon", there's a song called " The Wind Calls Maria". Mariah Carey claims this is where her mom got the name.

Mariah is a form of the Aramaic name Marjam (mari-YAM) meaning bitterness.
Marjam was adopted into the Hebrew language much later.
Most liguists believe that it is derived from the Egyptian mry, meaning the beloved.
