I went there to visit last year and I went to both of them. I'd rather go to Tokyo anytime of the day than Kyoto. I love Kyoto but Tokyo is awesome.

I guess it's a choice between modern Japan and rural traditional Japan.
If the travelers were interested in Japanese custom / religion and culture in general I'd recommend Kyoto anyday.
If they just wanted to enjoy the night life and shopping then Tokyo is the best choice.
With that said, although I love to visit Tokyo anytime of the year, Kyoto is the place I want to live.
I can stand Tokyo for maybe 1 to 5 yrs but no more than that.
Compared to Tokyo, Kyoto may seem boring but to live and raise kids in that city would be awesome.

Both are great, but I like Tokyo a little better. Kyoto is scenic and nice for a first time trip, but I prefer the speed and excitement of Tokyo and surrounding areas...

Kyoto is the most beautiful traditional city in Japan.
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2158.html
Tokyo is the biggest, modern city in japan.
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2164.html
so I think both Kyoto and Tokyo...would be fun^^
btw Have you seen the movie Geisha??if you interested in it,Kyoto is better.and Osaka close to Kyoto.Osaka's people are warm, kind and funny.and Osaka has Universal Studio Japan.
but if you luv to go shopping or night club,or big city,Tokyo is better.even though Tokyo is the biggest city, there are many temple or traditional stuff here in jTokyo^^and then you know?Tokyo Disney resoat is close to Tokyo^^
anyway I'm sure you'll have fun everywhere in Japan.
and Tokyo and Kyoto are completely opposite.I think...
hmmm I reccomend both Tokyo n Kyoto.and Osaka also.
luck you^^

Since cheaper more convenient flights go to Narita and therefore Tokyo, it's easy to do both.
Kyoto however has more cultural sites than Tokyo. You've got the Golden (and the more aestitic Silver) Pavilion, Kiyomizu-dera Temple with his balcony above the fall leaves and spring cherry blossoms, Nijo Castle with its painted walls, Geisha spotting, Zen gardens, etc...
But Tokyo does have a very nice traditional section in Asakusa and Nippori. It has the modern Japanese vibe in places like Akihabara, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. Plus nearby you have Kamakura with the Great Buddha and Nikko with the ornate Tosho-gu shrine.
Do both.

Kyoto is much smaller and has many great sites to see. Like the golden palace/temple/shrine. Tokyo is also really cool too, but it is so big it can be overwhelming.

kyoto used to be a beautiful vast city in japan... but now its an ugly city with beautiful things hidden...while tokyo is a fast paced city with millions of people a block and millions of places to shop and stay...while kyoto is a poor place and has small shops and tempals....personaly id love to visit both! :)
