A novel (from French nouvelle Italian "novella", "new") is an extended, generally fictional narrative in prose. Until the eighteenth century, the word referred specifically to short fictions of love and intrigue as opposed to romances, which were epic-length works about love and adventure. During the 18th century the novel adopted features of the old romance and became one of the major literary genres. It is today defined mostly by its ability to become the object of literary criticism demanding artistic merit, a specific 'literary' style and a deeper meaning than a true story of the same content could claim to have.

Word requirements (length) for a novel varies by publisher. The minimum length (Harlequin) is 55,000 words. The maximum length is generally about 200,000 words but it has to be a bestseller to go that long.
Average length for a novel is 85,000 to 110,000 words.
A novel is characterized by one main plot and several subplots. A short story generally has just a main plot. A novella (less than 50,000 words, but more than 10,000 words) usually has a main plot and one or two subplots.
Hope this helps.
