Start with the basics and add on. I've listed some fashion basics:
1. A pair of great-fitting jeans in a darker wash
2. Black (cashmere preferably) sweater
3. Black pants
4. Crisp white button down shirt
5. Comfortable but fashionable heels in your favorite color
6. A knee-length or shorter trenchcoat
7. A blazer in wool or cotton depending on the season
8. White t-shirt or camisole
Fit is key with style. Pick what looks good on you and if you have to get it tailored do it. Don't pick what's trendy if you can't pull it off. Finally, if you wore a trend the first time it was around, you're probably too old to get away with it the second time (legwarmers and leggings come to mind).

It really depends on your coloring (hair, skin, eyes), your body type, your personality. It can take years to cultivate a personal style. Make sure you are wearing things that are comfortable to you and make you feel beautiful. However, you will also want to think about what you put on and how you put it together says to the world. If youre looking for more clear cut guidelines, check out these magazines: glamour, marie claire, in style, and vanity fair. Im not saying you should completely copy the looks, but use it for ideas in colors, prints, interesting texture combinations, things like that. I can tell you, as far as fall fashion, pretty much nothing is out right now, you really cant go wrong. Feminine, menswear, flowy skids, straight leg skinny pants, everything will work right now. I would suggest buying a few key pieces that you can mix and match and wear with a lot of what you already own. Remember: IT'S ABOUT WHAT YOU LIKE, NOT WHAT YOU THINK YOU SHOULD LIKE.
Happy Hunting!

Wear what you like - when you feel good in what you're wearing, you look better than someone in the most trendy clothes who's uncomfortable.
Also, wear things that fit you well - not every trend will work for everyone.
That said, one big part of fashion right now is contrast - wearing a dressy shirt with jeans, or a fuzzy sweater with a semi-sheer shirt. Belts are a big thing right now, too, especially big ones - belt them around your waist instead of your hips (this is especially good for redefining your body when you're wearing a loose top). Skinny-leg jeans are popular, but this is one of those things that not everyone is comfortable in. Boots are popular, and as winter comes up, more people are wearing tights with boots or pumps.
Hope that helps!
