Watching old 40's and 50's movies, why do they slide over to the passengers side to get out of the cars, why don't they just get out the drivers side, sure looks like it would be easier? Just wondering.

I was taught to exit a car from the passenger side especially on busy streets. When I ride my bicycle I'm always wary of parked cars. Never know when you might run into a suddenly open car door.

It is safer to get out curbside than in traffic and curbside will always be passenger side in the US. Now there really aren't bench seats up front anymore so it isn't an option.

That's how it was. The car and everything was so big and had so much room. It also gave the girl the opportunity to sit as close, or as far away from the boy. If they were "steady", she was expected to stay in the middle. If they're on their first dates, she should sit by the window.
That's all I know. :)

It was probably widely accepted to be safer to exit on the curb side. Perhaps our car culture has changed, but I'm not sure why.

They had to keep the camera in one place, the actors needed to stay in the frame, hence, the one door exit.
