Check around the house and see if there is an operation and maintenance manual for the furnace.

Look on the furnace and get the make and model number.

Try doing a search on the web for the O&M manual if you don't have one around

A gas fired forced air furnace does not need to be serviced every year. Changing filters as needed is all that is required. There is no tune up that is going to improve longievity of any of the components. You could remove the blower door and vacuum out the compartment and do the same in the burner area. The ducts never would need to be cleaned in a five year period and if you've keep on top of filter changes may never be needed.

I would have had them cleaned in the first year, to get any of the different dusts, drywall, wood, dirt etc.,out of them. Then if you haven't done any home improvements, where there was a lot of dust, I have heard that you don't need to clean them very often. Every 4 or 5 years is good. As long as you change you furnace filter every month or so. The companies that perform the cleaning of your ducts will tell you that the ducts need cleaning every year. Keeps them in business. One other thing is you should have your furnace serviced every year by a qualified furnace technician. Don't want it breaking down in the middle of the night in winter. Colllllddddd!

The furnance should be serviced every year, clean filters, belts, etc.. The ductwork does not need to be cleaned for maybe 10-15 years

A service tech should definitely service and checkup your furnace, don't try to do it yourself.
You can change your filter every 3-4 months. Do this even during summer, because as the fan motor runs, dust & dirt can go through and get collected by the filter. You'll have more efficiency and safety with a clean system.

typically it should be serviced 1 time a year. the service man will tell you if the ducts need to be cleaned during the service visit. having it serviced will actually extend the life of your furnace

every 5 years depends how much dust your house gets, and on your environment. the older it gets the more it should be checked for cracks for carbon monoxide too.
