because dial up is analogue and broadband is digital. Computers use a digital signal which in the case of dial up first needs to be converted to analogue. There is a limit to how fast that conversion can be, that limit is 56kb per second. Digital broadband does not have a conversion limit but there is a distance of transmission limit as analogue signals can be transmitted over far greater distances.

Ok basicly, dial up has got to squeeze one tiny 56k block through the wire every seccond, where as broadband has quite literaly a broad band so it can transfer 10 in a seccond because there is more space for it to squeeze through
thats a very simplistic answer but thats basicly it.

Dial-up is limited by the inherent bandwidth of the phone line. Voice grade phone lines are good from DC to about 4 kHz, and you can't squeeze a lot of bits through a hole that small unless you have a connection that is virtually noise-free. DSL is good for several hundred kilohertz, and cable modems are good to about 6 MHz, so you can shovel a lot more bits through the connection.

The FCC States that a standard telephone line may not exceed 56k speeds. I have no idea why, but that has been in effect since the late 80's, early 90's.
Telephone companies got around it by moving the signal on a different frequency from the standard telephone line signal, using a splitter. While their DSL service is often more reliable. It can't match the speeds of the Fiber Optic Networks that cable companies use to transmit their signal.
DSL Service is often provided over old fashioned copper lines. While Cable Companies by necessity use Fiber Optic cables.

the rubber band in the webby net thingy is broader, so when it is wound up and let go it goes faster. Dial ups only got little bands so it wouldnt even power a model airplane.
