You could be suffering from carpal tunnel sydrome.
This occurs when the median nerve in your upper limb becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist (often the position that you type in can cause this). It can cause pain, weakness and numbness of the hand. Repetitive movements (such as typing) can cause CTS.The symptoms often also occur at night as people tend to sleep with wrists flexed (bent). Numbness can then start during the day. Women are more likely to suffer from CTS than men are.

You may want to take a minute the next time your hands are numb and make note of your posture. Are you sitting up straight, legs un-crossed, feet flat on the floor, with whatever you are working on in easy reach?

If you are slumped over or over reaching for what is right in front of you your body can put undue strain on your muscles and nerves. This can cause a whole range of symptoms in your extremeties including: numbness, tingling, pins and needles, and a falling asleep sensation.
