I haven't been successful in sleeping for over a month now, but these are good options:

~Exercise. Very strenous exercise in the daytime, not toward the evening.

~Only use your bedroom for sleeping. Not watching TV or movies.

~Spray lavendar on pillows, blankets and sheets. The aroma is relaxing and will calm any nerves.

~Use your mind in the evening. TV that makes you think, like game shows. Crossword puzzles or search and find words. Read magazines or a book.

~Chamomille tea is used as a sleep aid.

~If you can't sleep after those, try to get up and move for a little while, and come back to bed in 15-20 mins. Don't just lie in bed making yourself try to sleep.

Whenever she can't sleep your friend should try reading until she gets very tired or falls asleep.

Another(silly thing) that works for me is to get comfortable in bed, under the covers, with the lights out. Then I try to count every part of my body(inside and out of it) that I know the name of. It seems to get my mind off the hurry, worry and stress of my life and helps me to relax. (Counting all the people that I know is another thing that helps me.)

If all else fails, your friend may need to go to a doctor.

Spend the day outside in a park or the country. It will take its toll by late afternoon, the more activity the better. Fall days are an excellent time for this to work plus you won't have to take anything.

Eat cornflakes or some other type of cereal with milk. Eating something starchy will put her right to sleep. It always works for me.
