The Beats were a group of slacker guys with moderate skill in writing who hung out in coffeehouses, smoking cigarettes, listening to jazz and taking drugs ("Bennies"). They supposedly were these intellectuals, coming up with big new ideas. Jack Kerouac is considered the leader of the movement, and he wrote a few books. The most famous one is called "On the Road" and is a long and random description of him and some friends driving back and forth across the country, mooching off of friends and not doing a single productive thing. Get jobs, you bums.

The beat Genertion was those in the 50's who liked jazz and art, and were the forerunner of the "hippies" of the "60's" They often hung out in coffee houses and jazz clubs and wore black clothing. It was a reaction to the bland and crew cut generation, stemmingfrom WW2 and the Kerean War.

It was started back in the late fifities and early sixties with a group of people called "Beatniks" They hung out in coffee houses listening to people reading poetry, short stories and non-fiction from authors such as Jack Kerovac. It is from here that such words as; groovy, copacetic, cool came from.
