An individual who manages a Web site. Depending on the size of the site, the Webmaster might be responsible for any of the following: making sure that the Web server hardware and software is running properly, designing the Web site, creating and updating Web pages, replying to user feedback, monitoring traffic through the site.

A webmaster (some women prefer webmistress) is a person responsible for designing, developing, marketing, or maintaining Web site(s). The term webservant is sometimes used when the person is providing such services to a church or charity. The webmaster of a Web site may also be called a system administrator, the author of a site, or the Web site administrator.

Webmasters are practitioners of Web communication. Typically, they are generalists with HTML skills who can manage all aspects of Web operations. On a smaller site, the webmaster will typically be the owner, developer and/or programmer, in addition to the author of the content.

On larger sites, the webmaster will act as a coordinator and overseer to the activities of other people working on the site and is usually an employee of the owner of the Web site, hence webmaster can also be listed as an occupation. If the webmaster is hired by a larger Web site, or promoted to the position, he/she could be doing things ranging from system administrating work, to managing large projects, and making sure everyone is doing their job(s) correctly.

In the early days of the use of the term "webmaster," this role encompassed all aspects of planning, coding, production, and user interface. The webmaster may have many of the duties of an Information Architect, including ensuring site usability, user experience and menu taxonomy.

However, since the late 90s, this type of webmaster role was typically only found working on small Web sites that could be managed by one person, or in environments where there was not a great deal of role definition. The current model tends to be more team oriented with a site manager or online producer leading a team consisting of web developers, designers, programmers, QA lead, Adobe Flash developers and often at least one usability expert or a UI/UE team.

A broader definition of webmaster is a businessperson who uses online media to sell products and/or services. This broader definition of webmaster covers not just the technical aspects of overseeing Web site construction and maintenance but also management of content, advertising, marketing and order fulfillment for the Web site.

Core responsibilities of the webmaster include the regulation and management of access rights of different users of a web site, the appearance and setting up web site navigation. Content placement can be part of a webmaster's responsibilities, while content creation is typically regarded as something that is not part of what a webmaster does. However, on a site that the webmaster is creating independently, the webmaster is usually the person who creates the content.

Typically, the webmaster is the agent who reads user feedback and complaints about site functionality. The webmaster's email address usually contains the word webmaster or admin, for example, webmaster@example.com or admin@example.com. The email address is usually found in the footer of the web site, or on a contact page.

As web development has become increasingly complex and important to businesses, so has the role of webmaster evolved. Many of those professionals who once wore the title have had to choose a preferred focus: the more technically oriented web developers, artistic/aesthetic graphic web designers, stronger administrative generalists became producers or project managers, and others may have chosen to focus on sales, marketing or business development.

I would define a webmaster as the person you contact when you need something changed/added/removed on a web site. Or if you are having problems using a web site, you contact the webmaster.

Typically, a webmaster wears many hats, from being a web designer (graphics, HTML), to being a web developer (closer to a programmer), to being a customer support contact (solving problems with a web site), to being the person responsible for administering a web server (sysad).

If you are interested in becomin a webmaster, the more skills you acquire in the above areas, the better off you will be.

A webmaster is NOT someone who works on the internet all day.

A webmaster is a one-stop website administrator. It's a catch all title meaning that they have multiple responsibilities for a website. Some of those responsibilities include...but may not be limited to...

Programmer (languages like HTML, ASP.NET, C#.NET, javascript, VbScript, Cold Fusion, Perl, etc...)
Content Manager - Meaning that they are responsible for gathering and refreshing content on the site.
Graphic Design - (has a eye for design. Works with graphic design tools like Illustrator, and Photoshop to create custom graphics and to edit existing graphics/photos)
Server Skills- skilled with managing and maintaining the web servers and hardward and components associated with it.
Support - Able to troubleshoot and debug complex situations.
Website Analytics - Tracks and reports on website traffic and usage statistics. Can explain what these reports mean to the business

There may be others, but this is a pretty good description of the kinds of things a webmaster might do. Usually you see the term webmaster in small IT shops. Larger shops with more complex applications break employee roles down into programmer, project manager, graphic designer, etc...

A webmaster is a person responsible for designing, developing, marketing, or maintaining Web site(s). Sometimes a webmaster will assume only one role (such as maintaining a site that someone else created), or they may be involved in the entire process of getting a website up and running as well as updating it as it needs changes.

I myself have landed several jobs building sites for small businesses, so yes it can be done. However, if you want to work on a big coprorate website (such as Yahoo), you probably will want to have a college degree under your belt and a portfolio of sites that you have created to show off your talents.

It used to be one person that creates and hosts and is responsible for maintaining a website. However, now various parts of that job are usually done by different people. In other words, a company who has nothing but servers will usually host a website and be responsible for their serrvers being accessible by the Internet. There is also a person who may have designed the layout, writing (aka copy), and format of the website. And, there may be another person now responsible for programming the site to make it look like what the site "owner" wants it to to look like. Nowadays webmaster usually refers to the person who directly accesses the server to modify, through programming, the website so it looks like what the creative person had in mind. So, for big corporate commercial sites, if you see something wrong with the website itself, contact the webmaster. If you have a problem with a product built or sold by the corporation who owns the site, leave the poor webmaster alone, he/she's got nothing to do with the quality of the company's products.

A web master designs, builds, and edits script for construction of a website. He may upload the site to a server and charge a fee. Web masters also maintain websites. Just like anything, if you are good at what you do, potential to make alot of money is always there.
