My wife loves the original V.C. Andrews, especially 'Flowers in the Attic.' I have been reading 'Wilderness: The Lost Poems of Jim Morrison'. Before writing off that collection of poems because he was a rock star, remember he was also a graduate of U.C.L.A. film school with minors in English Literature and psychology, a major singer/songwriter, and a writer of four different books of poetry. He read Walt Whitman, Allen Ginsberg and Oscar Wilde.

'Vanished' by Mary McGary Morris is great. So is Maya Angelou's 'A Brave and Startling Truth'. I tried reading Margaret Atwood and I am not against feminism, but she is too hard to read. No flow, no rhythm. Couldn't even get past first two chapters. Her poetry is wickedly good and ironic, though. She has a new collection out, first in ten years.

Religious books:

"The Passion" by Geza Vermes;
"Tao Te Ching' by Lao Tzu;
"Islam for Dummies" by various scholars.

I hate Stephen King and Anne Rice. Anne Rule, though, is great, as is Danielle Steele, who actually writes poetry. My wife loves old Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys and fashion magazines. She hates Harlequin but likes Avon Romance. Don't read'em, I don't know. For magazines, old copies of McLean's, Surface, Time, Life, Hello!, National Geographic and Horse Rider.

I just finished reading "The Lovely Bones". Fabulous book, you should check it out. Has a rather interesting take on Heaven and the characters are sculpted very well. If it weren't for the slightly supernatural stuff and the point of view, the book could be mistaken for a true story.

If you like sci-fi/horror/fantasy, you should check out the Rachel Morgan series from Kim Harrison. *my personal favorite*

The Trilogy of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Fun and entertaining. Fiction, very creative, they are not necessarily for children, he touches sensitive subjects such as religion, creation, souls.

A History of Knowledge by Charles Van Doren. History but fun, explaining what has happened in humanity from the beginning and what we have learned. Enlightening and definitely not boring.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Dark Fiction. Cool intricate characters and plots.

well, it depends on what you like to read about. i just finished a book called 'The Great Controversy' by Ellen White. it's about the history of Christianity from the time of Jesus' death to today. i loved it.
i'm currently reading 'Maximum Ride: Schools Out Forever' by James Patterson the one that goes before it is called 'Maximum Ride'. i like James Patterson, however these novels are quite different from what he usually writes - good, though not great.
have you read the Harry Potter books. even if you're not a kid (& i'm not) very cute stories. also the eragon series is good - the authors name is Paolini.
