Best gifts are those NOT purchased in the flea market open air type places that feed on tourists. Best advice I can offer is to ask the person what they like. Japan is filled with great old antiques and artifacts.

Many modern inexpensive woodblock artists create beautiful paintings and arts works that will eventually become antiques.

Kimono and Obi are always a brilliant gifts. They are fantastic, delicate and intricate pieces of art that can be worn or hung on the wall as art.

Little things that are popularized in America come in the Japanese version (For children) like Pokemon cards, Yugio Cards Neopets and little electronic games too. Nintendo especially.

You can buy them in most large cities. Harajuku square has a great market that is not too expensive and not too much...

Always bargain down politely in Japan, as it is not as socially acceptable to do so like it is in the markets in China. Remember your Gozaimasu....

Best places to buy souvenirs are probably at the international airport (Kansai airport) on your way home, or in Kyoto city. Prices vary depending on what you want. Just a rough idea for you though, a touristy t-shirt would cost you about 2000yen.

The best thing to do is go to a 100 Yen shop. You can find them anywhere and have some really good stuff for about a dollar.

I would get a kimono. Their very beautiful. I can't give you an estimate because it would depend on where you get them from. Some places run anywhere from $20 up to $500. But definately get one made of water silk.
