Aside from the usual 'be there for her' and 'let her know that you really care,' there are more grounded statements that can make her feel better. Being diagnosed with any potential terminal illness is a huge weight to bear, but with HIV, there is definitely a bright side. Because of advances in medicine and treatment, most people with HIV live longer more regular lives than past patients. In addition, fewer people that have HIV/AIDS are dying of it than ever before. Some recent studies have shown that a larger majority of HIV/AIDS patients are dying later in life of the same causes as you and I (heart disease, cancer, etc.) Not that dying of another illness is any better, but it illustrates the relative ease with which we can handle HIV/AIDS today. If one needs inspiration, look at Magic Johnson. He has had HIV for almost 15 years now and is doing well. I hope that your friend is able to cope well for the sake of her children, and I wish you and her the best in the future.

HIV treatments these days allow those with the virus to live pretty much normal lives. It's not a death sentence like it used to be.

Just be there for her. Let her know that there is still hope.
