I am one of those who thinks it can never happen. After all both of them are in business... but one of them likes to think or maybe just to tell us that it is on a mission of doing "no evil". believe me if google went into the operating system market microsoft would be sh*tting big brown bricks.
especially since pretty much every service google have ever come out with is, and remains, completely free - google could be making extra billions per year from all the stuff they have on the go but they don't.
everyone sees microsoft as the cash-cow it is, producing mostly horrendous and buggy software. just because microsoft got a headstart and bullied other companies to get where they are doesn't mean they're invincible.
in fact it's only because they use their cash to bully retailers into including their operating system that they're where they're at:

heck, gates didn't even create dos or windows, he nicked them.
this is why microsoft is always in the news in anti-monopoly cases and google isn't.
google's approach to programming is completely fresh and comes from a different angle combined with a better quality of staff.

They are in business doing different things.
If google decided to start programming, Microsoft wouldn't care. There are plenty of other OS's out there, and they don't seem to phase MS at all.
Look at Unix for example. Much more stable, and free. /shrug.

Google and Microsoft, although have a lot in common have their own expertise.
I can say that google is more famous than Microsoft.
Microsoft is not as famouse as "windows"
When you say that word search, GOOGLE is more prefered than MS.
Microsoft is BIGGER in its own sense, so as GOOGLE.
For me GOOGLE can never be MICROSOFT.
and MICROSOFT can never be GOOGLE.
Let use it as an advantage.
